Listening to the Filipino youth for 10 years, the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations Awards (TAYO) Foundation, Inc. has heard stories one could laugh, cry, and be moved about. But, despite all feelings, the stories never fail to inspire.

TAYO continues to seek for ‘stories’ this year as the 11th Search for Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO 11) officially launches today. TAYO Awards Foundation and the National Youth Commission (NYC) will be accepting entries from all over the country until the deadline, 30 July 2013. TAYO Search is held annually to provide duly-deserved incentives and recognition to the country’s best youth groups, thus, encouraging youth involvement in nation-building and best practices-sharing among organizations. It also maintains a yearly-updated database of the nation’s youth organizations.

Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, Inc., the Search Presentor, grants Php 50,000 to the 10 winning organizations and Php 25,000 is granted to the other organizations that make it to the National Finals. Apart from the prestigious recognition, the winning organizations receive an especially commissioned trophy sculpted by Mr. Toym De Leon Imao.

Entries will be evaluated using the following general criteria: (1) Impact of the Project Entry to Stakeholders; (2) Harnessing the Spirit of Volunteerism and Citizenship; (3) Creativity and Innovation; (4) Sustainability; and, (5) Effective Use of Resources.

TAYO 11 is open to all youth groups, organizations, clubs, and societies whose membership and leadership are composed of at least 15 youth members (15-30 years old).

Established in 2002, TAYO Foundation is the only known award-giving body for outstanding youth organizations in the Philippines. It aims to discover and laud exceptional youth organizations that have contributed to the development of their local communities, schools, or work places, through their innovative projects. To date, more than 1000 youth organizations have joined the search and are now part of the fast-growing TAYO youth network.

To know more about the search, information is available in www.tayoawards.net. An online entry form can be filled out at the TAYO website. For inquiries, TAYO Secretariat can be contacted through text at 0917 TXT-TAYO (898-8296) or e-mail at tayo.secretariat@gmail.com.

In 2002, youth organizations from all over the Philippines were given a chance to be part of a selection of the most dynamic groups of young individuals yearning to effect positive change in their communities. This year marked the 10th batch of winners of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) – completing its first hundred awardees.

In an awarding ceremony held on December 6 at the Heroes Hall in Malacañang, President Benigno S. Aquino III called on the youth to join the government in nation-building: “Pinapatunayan ng Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations ngayong taon na handang makipagbayanihan ang kabataan sa tuwid na daan.

PNoy addressing TAYO Awardees

A renowned former youth leader who is recognized as the person who thought of awarding outstanding youth organizations, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan expressed his gratitude for the youth for their dynamism. “We once again thank our TAYO winners for being the shining light amidst the darkness of the world. Thank you for being the break of dawn that signifies the start of a new, changed day. Thank you for showing us with your work that indeed, we have every reason to be helpful; that in fact, genuine change is now before us, is now happening, is now becoming a reality.” Pangilinan said.

TAYO Awards Foundation President Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV added, “When Sen. Kiko Pangilinan and the National Youth Commission (NYC) started TAYO in 2002, we thought that we would soon run out of organizations and the youth will continue coming up with the same projects as before. But we are continuously surprised with the variety of projects and the number of organizations and their locations. It seems that in every corner of the country, and for every issue that our countrymen have faced, there is a youth organization working to alleviate the problem.”

Youth Commissioner Georgina Nava, the Chairperson of the TAYO 10 National Organizing Committee, surmised that “Based on the project entries that we went through during the national judging, we witness the growth of agriculture and social entrepreneurship-related projects. Whenever our youth encounters a problem in their community, they are able to come up with various innovative solutions that address the issue. Sama-samang tumaTAYO ang mga kabataan at tumutulong sa kapwa Pilipino para sa ikabubuti ng ating bansa.“

In an emotion-filled response delivered on behalf of the national finalists, Meryl Grace Agudelo from I CAN Make A Difference, Incorporated re-affirmed the youth’s commitment in helping solve the problems of their communities and in effect, the entire nation. “TAYO Awards paved the way to gather twenty young people who wish the same things. A progressive and empowered Filipino communities…Gone are the days of band aid solutions to social problems—we further address constant bottlenecks of our communities through innovation, creating more opportunities through social enterprises, education, tourism and health. We employed frameworks which are sustainable with measurable impact. We do this only because we love our country.”

The 10th batch of TAYO awardees come from diverse backgrounds, offering alternative approaches to seemingly similar problems. First up is the problem of the lack of electricity in remote areas. One Million Lights Philippines (NCR) tied up with an international organization to access thousands of solar lamps which they were then able to distribute to needy communities all over the country. On the other hand, the Ramon Magsaysay Technological University – Electrical Engineering Society saw the same problem in a village in Zambales, provided a solar power charging station and solar lamps to Aeta families and are now looking into providing a more sustainable renewable power source in the area.

TAYO 10 Winners pose with PNoy, Sen. Kiko, and Bam Aquino.

To respond to the needs of their communities to recycle trash and generate income, two organizations have implemented similar projects, using discarded tarpaulins to make bags and other materials. I CAN Make a Difference, Inc. used “fusion” technology to provide differently-abled young Zamboanguenos a way to earn a living, while the Mandaue-based Cebuano Youth Ambassadors gave out-of-work moms in the slum areas the ability to earn extra income to provide for their families’ needs.

Other organizations saw the need to maintain the livelihood opportunities of people in their area. Monte Verde 4-H Club from Zamboanga City helps young farmers and their families improve their earnings not only through agricultural training for better yields, but processing their crops for better earnings. The CBA-Kalipunan Marketing Junior Executives from the University of the Cordilleras aims to encourage organic farmers in Benguet by providing them with greenhouses, ensuring produce year-round even through extreme climate changes to earn them enough profit. On another hand, the University of Luzon Students in Free Enterprise in Dagupan provided fisherfolk in Pangasinan a chance to regain lost income from environmental degradation through the technology of Aquaphonics, which allow them to form fish condominiums that can also support crops like mushrooms.

The remaining three organizations focused on improving the way of life of the people around them. Angat Kabataan in Taytay, Rizal caused the awakening of hope and renewal of cooperation from various sectors in their town in Rizal by cleaning up and revitalizing a dead creek. Dire Husi Initiatives from Cagayan de Oro not only encouraged street children to stay away from vices, but also to turn their lives around by going back to school and earning though arts education and livelihood trainings. The La Salle Debate Society put the Philippines on the map of the international debating scene by organizing the World Universities Debates Championship, the largest academic gathering of students in the world, amassing not only income from tourism but fostering friendships and encouraging local support in the field of debate.

Winning groups each received Php 50,000 and trophies specially-handcrafted by internationally-awarded artist Toym DeLeon Imao. The following special awards were also handed out: Coke Barkada to the Cebuano Youth Ambassadors; Project SMART Awardee to the RMTU-Electrical Engineering Society, Lenovo Innovative Tech Award to the University of Luzon Students in Free Enterprise and the CEMEX Youth in Nation-Building Award to Angat Kabataan. All organizations that reached the national finals received gift certificates from Jollibee.

Other organizations who joined this year are: the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority and Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity, both from the UP Manila College of Medicine; Tingug-Cagayan De Oro; Students in Free Enterprise – Sultan Kudarat State University; Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers – Student Chapter of West Negros University; Hayag Youth Organization in Leyte; Development Communication Society of Benguet State University; English Society of Aklan State University; Kythe Ateneo from NCR; and Iloilo’s John B Lacson Foundation Maritime University Molo Community Extension Service Society.

TAYO Year 10 is organized by the TAYO Awards Foundation, Office of Senator Kiko Pangilinan, and the National Youth Commission. Presented by Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, it is sponsored by SMART, Jollibee, Cebu Pacific, Cemex, Lenovo, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). The search is supported by the Philippine Council of Young Leaders in Governance (PCYLG).

24 August 2012--A short video entitled Acceptance, created by U.P. film student Petersen Vargas, bags first place at GENERAT10N TAYO: Mga Bida ng Bagong Dekada, a viral video contest. It tells a story about “a boy [who] is confronted by his father about his problem over his relationship,” as the video description says on its Youtube webpage. Watch the video below:

Video Link: Acceptance

The 90-second clip manages to be short but complete, and touching but impactful at the same time. The entry also won the People’s Choice Award, having accumulated more than 4000 likes on both Facebook and Youtube during the voting period of only 2 weeks. The entry hopes to address Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) issues in the country as the video advocates for change or acceptance to start in the family.

Second place was won by an entry entitled Filipino Time, created by Pete Francis Abareta, an I.T. student from Bicol University, Legazpi City. His entry can be viewed below:

Video link: Filipino Time

The second-placer hopes to change the negative connotation of the so-called “Filipino time.” It further encourages viewers to change innate assumptions of Filipino time being late to being always on time. In just a minute-and-a-half, the entry also effectively portrays a clear message to its viewers.

The Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) Awards Foundation Inc. launched GENERAT10N TAYO: Mga Bida ng Bagong Dekada (A Viral Video Contest) last March 2012 as part of its 10th Year Anniversary celebration. The contest hoped to show the new generation of Filipino youth–how they play their role as nation-builders, and their visions for a better Philippines. They were given the guide questions: (1) WHAT is the problem that they want to address in their community; (2) WHY do they want to address the problem; and (3) HOW do they plan to address the problem, and open happiness in their community?

Other entries tackled issues on health, environment, culture, and leadership manifesting the Filipino youth who are willing agents of change and paving the ways for a better Philippines.

Manila, Philippines – With less than two days before the deadline for submission of entries to the search for the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations, eighty-five (85) youth organizations are in danger of being taken out of the search due to incomplete documentary requirements.

TAYO, being the country’s premier award-giving body to outstanding youth organizations, is a much-coveted honor for Filipino youth orgs. With a Php50, 000.00 project grant at stake, a link with corporate sponsors, media exposure, and the rare opportunity to be awarded by no less than the President of the Philippines in Malacañang, hundreds of youth organizations fight neck to neck every year to secure a spot and be proclaimed as one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations.

This year, out of the hundreds of applications, eighty-five (85) youth organizations are at risk of being eliminated from the search before it even begins. Student organizations from top universities were not spared from the TAYO Secretariat’s initial sweep. Several organizations from the Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University, Far Eastern University, University of Santo Tomas, and the University of the Philippines—Diliman and Los Baños campuses—are included in the list.

“There are very basic documentary requirements which these organizations failed to submit,” the TAYO Secretariat explained, referring to the following documents all applicants must submit:
1) List of officers (include leaders and founders if available). Please indicate name, position, contact number/s (landline and/or cellphone) and email addresses of all current officers;
2) a one-page certification attesting to the existence and veracity of the information submitted
for In-School Youth Organizations, a certification from the Office of Student Affairs
for Community-based, Out-of-School or Working Youth Organizations, a certification from the barangay or local officials;
3) an application briefer using the prescribed format which can be downloaded here; and
4) a three-page project documentation (can be any of the following: photos, testimonies of partners or beneficiaries, certificates, etc.)

Deadline for submission of entries is on Monday, 30 July 2012, the TAYO Secretariat expressed optimism that most—if not all—of the eighty-five (85) organizations can comply with the documentary requirements on time, and added, “Many organizations in the danger list have really great projects. We’ve read their project descriptions and we cannot wait to feature their stories in the special anniversary issue of the TAYO magazine. Some of these organizations’ stories will definitely wow the Philippines, and even the world. We might just find another Efren Peñaflorida this year.”

Documentary requirements must be sent to tayo10entry@gmail.com. All organizations which are included in the list will be receiving an e-mail from TAYO informing them about their deficiencies.

Below is the complete list of youth organizations whose applications are about to be invalidated:
Answer: Applicants must be:
Filipino citizen, 15 – 25 years old as of April 15, 2012
An active member of an organization for at least a year (school-based or community-based organization)

Optional (to avail of the camp for FREE): Accomplish the TAYO Search Project Entry Form and submit it along with the other requirements for the Camp. Other requirements for the Project Entry can follow. You just need to accomplish the Project Entry Form.

3. Is there a registration fee for the camp?
Answer: We are providing two (2) options for qualified participants:
(a) PayPhp1,500.00 which will serve as your contribution to cover for the transportation to and from Manila to Naga City, accommodation at the CWC, meals, and camp expenses;
OR
(b)Submit ONE (1) Project Entry to the TAYO 10 Search which shall serve as your CAMP TICKET to cover for the transportation to and from Manila to Naga City, accommodation at the CWC, meals, and camp expenses.

Option B is a double-edged choice, 1 – you get to join the camp for free, and 2 – your org gets the chance to win Php50,000+ and be awarded by the President of the Philippines in Malacanang.
